UPDATE: Pedestrian killed in downtown Calgary

CALGARY – A woman hit by a car in the city’s downtown core on Thursday has died.

It happened at around 12:30 p.m. at 10 Avenue and 5 Street S.W.

Police say it appears a 39-year-old woman was crossing the street in a crosswalk when she was hit by a 2007 Chevrolet Express van.

The van was turning from southbound 5 Avenue onto westbound 10 Avenue S.W. when the pedestrian was struck.

The van had a green light at the time, and the pedestrian was crossing with a walk signal.

Police say the victim was dragged under the vehicle for a short distance.

She was treated on scene for injuries but later died in hospital.

Police don’t think speed or alcohol are factors.

So far, they haven’t laid any charges against the driver, but say they are being considered.
