Saskatoon sets new University Cup attendance record

SASKATOON – The 2014 PotashCorp University Cup presented by Co-op drew a record crowd of 41,089 fans in Saskatoon.

The new attendance record for Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) men’s hockey championships was set at Credit Union Centre with the closing game of the four-day tournament on Sunday.

The previous tournament record, a seven game total, was set in 2000 when 40,956 spectators turned up in Saskatoon.

With 52 University Cup championships come and gone, the five most attended have all been held in Saskatoon (2014, 2013, 2000, 1999 and 1998.)

Alberta’s Golden Bears defeated the host University of Saskatchewan Huskies 3-1 in the gold medal game on Sunday afternoon.

Sunday’s final brought in 6,289 fans. Edmonton holds the CIS single-game attendance record with 10,331 in 2005.

CIS hockey fans in Halifax, Nova Scotia, will have the opportunity to see Canada’s top university teams compete for the 2015 and 2016 University Cups.
