More laneway suites planned for Regina

REGINA – As our city is in the midst of a serious housing crunch, council is working to extend the city’s limits and looking at ways to further develop areas within the city.

“We need to be ready to move into the future and have a plan on what we’re going to do,” said Barbara Young, Ward 1 councilor.

And laneway units are just one part of that plan to boost the number of rental suites in the city.

They are small units, typically built above garages and accessible from a back alley.

Eleven laneway units are already being constructed in the Greens on Gardiner community, but on Monday, a plan to build up to 20 more in the south-end of Harbour Landing, is on city council’s agenda.

“We’re most interested in housing that’s available that meets peoples income levels,” said Young.

The suites will include a bedroom, living area, kitchen and a bathroom.

They will cost roughly $1,000 a month — something that Homes by Deveraux says, could be the key to solve our city’s affordability crisis.

“We believe in the model and how it will help people get into affordable housing and at the same time, alleviate that crunch,” said Jamie McDougald, chief operating officer of Homes by Deveraux.

Council will consider the next steps for this development project, Monday night at city hall.
