SASKATOON – After weeks of four to five water main breaks a day, the problem has returned to normal levels and repair times have shortened.

Residents in affected areas can expect water to be restored within one or two days of crews shutting it off, as opposed to wait time of four to seven days experienced earlier in March.

So far this year, there have been 175 water main breaks compared to 89 during the same time last year.

City officials say the fifth emergency water trailer is now ready and will be used when necessary.

Currently there are less than a handful of water main breaks in the city under repair.

“It’s been a tough slog for all of us, we’ve put in a lot of hard work and it’s good for us. When we’re done, we can be satisfied with our jobs and the work we’ve done and service we’ve provided,” said Trent Schmidt, the city’s acting director of public works.

“There will be a little of relief when we get through all the water main breaks but we’ll be onto spring programming and other stuff soon enough.”

Over the last 19 years, the record number of breaks for this same time of year was set in 1996 with 191.
