Hundreds of Edmontonians Bust a Move for breast health

EDMONTON – Dressed in their finest fitness attire, hundreds of people are spending Saturday moving, shaking and dancing in the name of breast cancer research.

Bust a Move for Breast Health is a six-hour fitness extravaganza that raises funds for breast cancer research at the Cross Cancer Institute.

“The work that’s being done at the Cross is truly grand slams for not only Alberta, but beyond,” said Brooke Rose with the Alberta Cancer Foundation. “The trials that they’re working on right here is ensuring that those Albertans that hear those words, ‘you have cancer’ have access to the best care possible.”

Christy Soholt was 28 years old when she heard those words; she was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer six years ago.

“It’s just a bit of a shock at the age of 28. There were a lot of other challenges to face, just with income loss and fertility issues and those kinds of things that you just don’t really think are side effects of a diagnosis that young.”

Soholt went through chemotherapy and surgery. She’s been cancer-free since late summer 2008.

The latest health and medical news emailed to you every Sunday.

“I definitely don’t fret about some of the little things that maybe I would have before. I look more at the bigger picture. I’m not as concerned with saving every penny for retirement, it’s more about living for the day and making sure to seize the moment. And really, it’s very important to me to give back to the community that I believe saved my life.”

And part of that giving back includes participating in Bust a Move.

“That’s really important to me to give back to the next generation and my own daughter and everybody else that might end up facing this disease.”

Bust a Move started in Halifax in 2010.

This is the event’s third year in Edmonton. Saturday’s event raised $400,000 for breast cancer research.
