Wynne fires up delegates at Liberal convention

TORONTO – Premier Kathleen Wynne will be firing up the party faithful today at a Liberal convention in Toronto.

The annual gathering is focused on getting ready for the next election, which could be around the corner if the minority Liberals fail to pass their spring budget.

Wynne is already in election mode, slamming her opponents as too reckless to lead the province.

She says Ontario can’t afford to experiment with the “radical” right-wing Tories, who’ll plunge the province into a labour war and turn back the clock on wages.

And Wynne says the “untested,” anti-business New Democrats can’t manage the economy while it’s still recovering from the recession. She says only the Liberals can be trusted with growing the economy and creating jobs — keeping Ontario in “safe hands.”

Those are the hands that cancelled two unpopular gas plants at a cost of up to $1 billion and driving up energy rates, said opposition parties.

There are also two criminal investigations underway, including one into the suspicious business activities of ORNGE, the province’s air ambulance service.

The Liberals are driving out businesses with high taxes and energy rates and catering to unions at the taxpayers’ expense, the Tories said.

“We’ve got to get this province turned around again,” said Tory Jane McKenna. “People are leaving this jurisdiction.”

But the purpose of the convention isn’t to hammer the opposition parties, said Labour Minister Yasir Naqvi, a former party president.

“Our focus is to continue to highlight our positive plan of economic growth,” he said.

“And the premier is going to obviously highlight the deficiencies that we’ve seen in other parties.”
