SASKATOON – A free, new app has been launched helping people find loved ones buried in cemeteries throughout Canada, including here in Saskatoon at Woodlawn Cemetery.

iCemetery can now be downloaded on both Apple and Android devices and is extremely user-friendly.

“What it will do is map out where you are and point to the location of the gravesite. As your walking the site it basically guides you right to the gravesite,” said Darren Crilly, the city’s director of parks.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“Just enter in names, surnames and first names and it will search for any gravesites that would match that name.”

The app is now helping visitors of the Woodlawn Cemetery navigate its grounds spanning over 100 acres.

“There are times where you get out there you get turned around, it is a big site so we figured that it would be a nice improvement to our customer service,” said Crilly.

A year in the making, city officials say the app has the ability to direct you to as many as 60,000 burial plots at the cemetery.

Saskatoon will also continue to have customer service representatives on-site to help visitors locate final resting places as well.

“The nice feature of this application though is that it’s available 24/7, 365 days a year so when our staff aren’t around, this application is available.”

The app is currently being used at both Woodlawn Cemetery and Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver, B.C.

Meanwhile, city officials confirmed that other jurisdictions in Western Canada use similar applications to iCemetery.
