Spring’s official arrival hampered by snowfall

The first day of spring may be on Thursday, but Old Man Winter isn’t done with Alberta just yet.

If you plan on travelling to the mountains on Wednesday, you may encounter heavy snow.

Environment Canada issued a series of snowfall warnings for Banff National Park, Kananaskis and Jasper around 4:30 a.m.

They say a low pressure system will travel south along the Rocky Mountains, bringing with it 5 to 15 centimeters of snow.

Officials caution the snowfall could reduce visibility to less than 500 meters, and won’t end until Thursday morning at the earliest.

Areas in the snowfall warning include: Banff National Park, Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek, Waterton Lakes Nat. Park, Hinton, Grande Cache, Jasper National Park, Kananaskis, Canmore, Nordegg, Rocky Mountain House and Caroline.

Spring weather in Alberta

Thursday marks the first day of spring, but Environment Canada isn’t forecasting very warm weather throughout the province.

In Calgary, they anticipate at high of just -2°C with about 5 to 10 centimeters of snow.

Edmonton will also see a high of -2°C with flurries.

And in Lethbridge, the temperature will sit steady near zero, with a strong west wind.
