HALIFAX – Nova Scotia’s tourism figures dipped last year with about 1.8 million overnight visitors, down about three per cent from 2012.
The province’s tourism agency says the number of visitors during the peak season was stable, but December saw a significant decline because of poor weather.
It says the number of people arriving by air and road is declining.
The agency blames a reduction in the number of flights and smaller planes that are used on routes to Nova Scotia for the drop in air travel.
Arrivals by road dropped two per cent from 2012.
The figures released by the Nova Scotia Tourism Agency do not include cruise ship visitors.
The agency says the number of Canadian visitors dropped three per cent, while visitors from overseas markets and the United States were both down two per cent.
But the numbers were more encouraging in two key markets as the number of visitors from the United Kingdom was up seven per cent and Germany was up 11 per cent.
The agency says Nova Scotia isn’t alone in a drop in visits by air.
“This is a national trend affecting overall air capacity to Canada and visitation from international destinations,” it said in a statement, adding that air traffic at Halifax’s airport was down one per cent.
