UPDATE: 2 arrests made in South End Halifax homicide

HALIFAX – Halifax Regional Police say they have arrested two people in connection to the homicide of David William Rose.

Rose, 65, was found murdered in his residence, a rooming house on South Street, just before 11 p.m. on Sunday.

Police said they arrested a 51-year-old man and 29-year-old woman Tuesday night.

The pair, who police say are both from Halifax, are in custody.

No charges have yet been laid.

An autopsy conducted Monday ruled Rose’s death was a homicide.

Rose, a retired millwright originally from Newfoundland, was a regular visitor at the outreach program offered by Saint Mary’s Basilica Cathedral downtown.

Friends at the drop-in Tuesday afternoon recalled a strong-willed and determined man, who often offered words of support.

“He was just a really strong person in the community and I loved him very much,” said Stephen Gates.

“We’re going to miss him and we need more people like him around. He was a pillar in the poor people’s community. He was a pillar for me.”

Those close to Rose say his wife passed away about seven years ago, and it’s believed he has a couple children.

He was having trouble with his diabetes and often walked with a cane.

More details to come.
