SASKATOON – Agriculture safety week is in full swing in Saskatchewan in an effort to get producers, ranchers and farming families talking about safety.

The Saskatchewan government has proclaimed agriculture safety week from March 9 – 15.

This year’s theme Let’s talk about it! encourages producers and Saskatchewan’s farming communities to discuss about hazards and risks so anyone who works or visits a farm is injury free.

“Farming has the potential to be dangerous for farmers, workers and their families,” said Lyle Stewart, Saskatchewan’s agriculture minister.

“By having safety discussions regularly, you can identify safety issues and reduce risk on your farm.”

According to the Canadian Centre for Health and Safety in Agriculture (CCHSA), an average of 14 people are killed each year on Saskatchewan farms in preventable incidents.

The province provides funding to the Agricultural Health and Safety Network to offer health and safety programming to more than half of its farming families.

Funding is also provided to the Saskatchewan Association of Agricultural Societies and Exhibitions for farm safety youth camps.

Saskatchewan’s agricultural safety week coincides with Canadian Agricultural Safety Week, an annual public education campaign focusing on the importance of safer agriculture.
