Young girl credits helmet for saving her life after fall at Castle Mountain

LETHBRIDGE – Miranda Strate doesn’t remember much about her school ski trip to Castle Mountain Resort.

“I remember going with my two best friends up Huckleberry on the ski lift and then I remember waking up in the hospital,” said Miranda.

The 12-year-old tumbled down an over seven metre cliff at the resort on Monday, hit a tree and was buried in snow.

Miranda’s father, Don Strate, says her daughter’s horrified friends saw her lose control and disappear out of sight.

“A lady from our school got to her and she was buried and helped dig her out.”

Angela Lacey was first by Miranda’s side and immediately worked to help the young girl.

“Her breathing wasn’t great and her airway was obstructed. I was worried about a neck injury and opened her airway and stabilized her neck,” said Lacey.

Miranda was rushed to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary by STARS air ambulance. She suffered a severe concussion and multiple bangs and bruises but surprisingly no broken bones.

“When I got out of the bed in the hospital room and looked in the mirror and was like ‘oh my gosh,'” said Miranda.

She credits her helmet and the quick action of her rescuers for saving her life.

“I was really happy that we had rules to wear helmets on these ski trips for school. It’s going to save your life if you end up doing what I did. It saved my life.”
