BELLEVILLE, Ont. – First Nations protesters forced the closure of a rural road east of Belleville on Monday as part of their call for a federal inquiry into murdered and missing aboriginal women.

Provincial police shut down the road (Shannonville Road between Old Highway Two and Airport Parkway) after an unspecified number of demonstrators blocked a section of the roadway.

Both OPP and Tyendinaga Territory police are monitoring the situation, and negotiations have been held with the protesters.

It’s the second recent shutdown of a road in the area related to the protests.

Another nearby road was closed for most of the weekend by provincial police after a bonfire was lit by about six demonstrators on Friday.

Mohawk activist Shawn Brant has been warning in recent weeks about the possibility of protests as a way to pressure the government to call an inquiry.
