Winnipeg wants to delay community mailbox plan

WINNIPEG – City council wants Canada Post to delay the installation of community mailboxes in northwest Winnipeg.

Critics of the plan say there hasn’t been enough consultation between Canada Post and the city about how the boxes will be installed in older neighbourhoods.

“Our mature neighbourhoods weren’t meant for this,” said Mynarski Coun. Ross Eadie.

Eadie brought a motion forward Wednesday that the mayor write a letter to Canada Post about the mailboxes.

“Let’s get them to figure it out,” Eadie said to fellow councillors Wednesday morning.

Mayor Sam Katz said the move is more of a gesture.

“We are going to share our thoughts with them, and if you are asking do I expect that to have a 180 turnaround impact on them, then no,” said Katz.

Last week Canada Post announced door-to-door delivery will be phased out in the R2P and R2V postal code neighbourhoods this fall, as part of a country-wide cost-cutting plan.

“We are going to really engage folks and get their preferences and then work with the city and municipal planners to come up with what the best and safe sites are,” said Canada Post’s Bill Davidson in an interview with Global News on March 20.

The city has the final say when it comes to where the community boxes will go.

The only councillors to vote against Eadie’s motion were Scott Fielding and Jeff Browaty.
