Robin Thicke, Paula Patton announce split

TORONTO — Singer Robin Thicke and actress Paula Patton announced Monday they have split up after nine years of marriage.

“We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time,” the couple said in a statement.

Thicke met Patton in 1991 when he was only 14 years old. They started dating two years later and were married in 2005.

The couple has a three-year-old son, Julian Fuego Thicke.

In an interview with Elle last year, Thicke admitted he and Patton fight frequently.

“Oh yeah! Lock up the golf clubs,” he said.

“If you don’t fight, then you don’t care. If you’re not fighting for the relationship, you need to move on.”

Thicke and Patton were last photographed together at the Grammy Awards on Jan. 27.

Thicke, 36, cancelled shows in Atlanta and Orlando last weekend. “I have unfortunately lost my voice,” he explained in a statement. He was spotted Saturday enjoying the rides at Disneyland with his son.

The “Blurred Lines” singer is scheduled to perform at Casino Rama in Ontario on March 11 and at the Juno Awards in Winnipeg on March 29. Thicke is nominated for Pop Album of the Year, Artist of the Year and Fan Choice.

Patton, 38, has starred in movies like Precious, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and 2 Guns. She is currently in Vancouver filming the Warcraft movie.

Thicke’s father, Canadian actor Alan Thicke, split from the singer’s mother Gloria Loring in 1984 after about 14 years of marriage. Alan’s five-year marriage to Gina Tolleson ended in 1999 and he has been married to Tanya Callau since 2005.

Robin Thicke told Elle said his father was a womanizer.

“My dad was single my whole pubescent period. He had Ms. Alabama, Ms. Dominican Republic — every week. I was like, ‘Dang, Pops,’” Thicke recalled. “He had an indoor Jacuzzi, and he frequented it. The first time I saw a naked woman was when I went to take a shower one morning before school. I was like, ‘Who is this girl in my shower?’”
