Crews stop small Kelowna fire from spreading

KELOWNA — Kelowna firefighters doused a blaze in the Mission area Saturday, preventing the fire from causing too much damage.

Crews were called to a property in East Kelowna around 11 a.m. They arrived to discover a wooden shed on fire.

Fortunately nobody was injured.

It’s believed the blaze stared when a homeowner emptied the embers from a fire into a garbage bin.

The embers then ignited the contents of the bin and the flames spread to the exterior of the wooden building.

Crews say the incident serves as a reminder for homeowners at this time of year.

“When you’re using wood fireplaces and cleaning them out, always be sure the embers are cold to the touch before disposing of them,” said Kelowna Fire Department Platoon Captain, Tim Light.

Officials estimate the fire caused $5,000 worth of damage to the shed.

It’s not known whether the losses are covered by insurance.
