STANLEY MISSION, Sask. – The body of a Lac La Ronge Indian Band elder was pulled from the icy waters of a northern Saskatchewan lake Saturday morning.

Last November, 66-year-old Solomon Roberts was riding his snowmobile on Otter Lake near Grandmother’s Bay when he fell through the ice.

“He shared a lot of his knowledge. He was a hunter and a trapper and he would always go out on the trap line. He also shared his many skills with the youth in the community because he was always helping out at culture camps that we had for students,” recalled Lac La Ronge Indian Band Chief Tammy Cook-Searson.

“He would make bows and arrows, paddles, birch bark baskets, birch bark hats – all kinds of arts and crafts.”

For nearly three months, volunteers and community members searched tirelessly for him. His body was located before 10:30 a.m. on Saturday by volunteers.

They were using a remotely operated underwater vehicle. The ROV had been purchased by the band and members were trained to use it.

Chief Cook-Searson told Global News a funeral has been scheduled for Wednesday.

RCMP are continuing to investigate this incident, though no foul play is suspected.
