Squamish’s Sea to Sky Gondola cabin falls due to environmental factors and wind: report

UPDATE: BCSA’s investigation found that the incident that caused an empty gondola car to fall in February 2014 was due to a combination of environmental and operational factors and high winds.

Previous story:

The B.C. Safety Authority is investigating after one of the eight-passenger cabins fell off the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish.

Since the line is not in operation yet, no one was injured in the accident which happened in the morning on Feb. 4.

The gondola’s general manager, Jayson Faulkner, says the gondola car came off the line while the system was being checked.

The cabin fell three to four metres on the rocks below.

In a report by Pique Newsmagazine Faulkner said the damage done to the cabin, which cost roughly $50,000 each, was too significant to repair.
