MONTREAL- Hundreds of employees working at Place-des-arts had to be evacuated from the performing arts building Thursday afternoon.
Firefighters were called to the arts centre just before 4:30 after employees reported smelling smoke in the building.
When emergency crews arrived on the scene they found that a fire had broken out in a passage leading to the roof on the eastern side of Salle Wilfred Pelletier.
About a hundred people working with the Opera de Montreal, Place des Arts and the Montreal Symphony Orchcestra were forced to leave the building.
“We first got the smell of a fire and people in charge of security took charge and called the policemen and they came very quickly” explained Denise Melillo, communications officer for Place- des- Arts.
All employees have since been allowed back into the building.
No shows had to be cancelled due to the fire.
No cause has been determined and an investigation is underway.
