TORONTO – Canadian supermodel Coco Rocha and designers Dean and Dan Caten of DSquared2 will be among the nominees at the inaugural Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards (CAFA).
CAFA aims to highlight the achievements of those in the Canadian fashion industry, working both at home and internationally.
Rocha was born in Toronto and grew up in Richmond, B.C. She was discovered in 2002 by modelling agent Charles Stuart at an Irish dance competition.
In 2007, she opened designer Jean Paul Gaultier’s fall/winter show by doing a Celtic step dance down the catwalk, a moment Vogue dubbed the “The Coco Moment.”
The woman of a thousand poses has been on the cover of countless top fashion magazines including, Vogue (American, Italian and Korean to name a few), Fashion magazine, Flare, and Harper’s Bazaar.
She has spoken out about eating disorders in the modelling world, and partnered with fashion retailer Jacob for a Photoshop-free campaign.
“Does this mean I’m now anti-photoshop? Absolutely not. I know what a valuable artist’s tool it can be in the right hands,” wrote Rocha on her blog.
“What I really admire is the fact that Jacob is trying to balance the scales a little by pulling so far back from what has been the current trend of total digital model manipulation.”
The awards, hosted by comedian Gerry Dee, will be held on February 1 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
