Taiwan, Saskatoon look to broaden economic ties

SASKATOON – The City of Saskatoon is looking to broaden its economic horizons internationally and moved yet another step in that direction.

Mayor Don Atchison met with officials from the Taipei economic and cultural office (TECO) for a trade and investment seminar on Monday and Tuesday.

TECO aims to promote bilateral trade, investment, culture and science and technology exchanges between Taiwan and Canada.

“Taiwan is also a potential partner for Canadian companies, especially for the small and medium companies,” said Dr. Chih-Kung Liu, TECO ambassador.

“Taiwan is a democracy. We are very transparent in our judicial environment and Canadian companies can use Taiwan as a gateway.”

Potash was one of the top five items Taiwan imported from Saskatchewan in 2012.

Also, state-owned Taiwan Power Corp. has long-term procurement contract with Saskatoon-based company Cameco. Under that contract, “Taipower” will purchase 700,000 pounds of uranium material from the company annually.

The local event was hosted by the Saskatoon regional economic development authority (SREDA), one of the first independent agencies of its kind in Canada.

In February, members of SREDA will embark on a trade mission to Taiwan in hopes to galvanize interest in Saskatoon among Taiwanese investors.
