Manitoba figure skaters headed for Olympics

WINNIPEG – A figure skating team based in Virden, Man., will be competing in the pairs event at the Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Rudi Swiegers, 26, and Paige Lawrence, 23, were named to the Canadian Olympic figure skating team on the weekend after placing third at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships in Ottawa.

Swiegers, who was born in South Africa, lives in Virden and the pair train in the western Manitoba town. Lawrence is from Kennedy in eastern Saskatchewan.

The team won bronze at the Canadian championships three times and placed fourth at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships in 2009.

This will be their first Olympic Games. Of the 17 figure skaters representing Canada at the 2014 Olympics, 14 are making their first Olympic appearances.

The 2014 Winter Olympic Games start on Feb. 7.
