Vancouver apartment building evacuated after fire breaks out in suite

A large Vancouver apartment building had to be evacuated early this morning after a fire broke out in one of the units.

The flames were first reported at about 2:45 a.m., forcing the evacuation of the entire complex.

Fire crews say the blaze broke out in an empty suite at the Hycroft Towers, located near Granville Street and Marpole Avenue. The suite is on the seventh floor and was under renovation at the time.

Officials say most of the damage has been contained to the empty unit, with some other parts of the building suffering minor smoke damage.

The dozens of residents who had to leave their homes have now been allowed back.

At this time it is not known what started the blaze, and no injuries have been reported.
