Friends remember 19-year-old who plunged to her death as a ‘really nice person’

Friends of 19-year-old Maurine Arogie, also known as Maurine Rinny, are still coming to terms with the fact that she is gone forever.

Maurine fell to her death early New Year’s Day from the 26th floor of a Surrey high-rise.

“Maurine was really bubbly, she had such an outgoing personality, she’s the type of person you would get along with from just meeting her for like a second,” says one of her friends who asked not to be identified.

“She always tells it like it is, she will always tell how she feels about everything and she was always real to herself.”

Maurine had just started university and friends say she was starting to put her life together.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Police were responding to a domestic call that night in Maurine’s unit when they apparently witnessed the teenager fall to her death. About an hour later police put her 23-year-old boyfriend in a cage car. He was released 24 hours later with no charges laid.

“It’s really shocking that all of this happened, but I really think they should pay more attention to the guy himself, because it’s not just from Maurine, I heard he was weird,” says Maurine’s friend.

Malvin Naboose, another of Maurine’s friends, says the last time they had talked they had planned to go Christmas shopping, but they never got the chance.

“She’s a really nice person, if you’re hungry she would buy you anything,” says Malvin. “I feel sorry for her family.”

Police are continuing their investigation to determine if Maurine’s fall was criminal or accidental.

Either way, she will not be forgotten anytime soon.

“I miss her, I wish I could talk to her, make more memories with her because she was really nice,” says Malvin. “The first day I met her I felt like I was comfortable with her, like I could trust her.”

“She’s a really nice person.”

Police are asking anyone who may have any information or witnessed this incident to contact the Surrey RCMP.
