REGINA – A new smartphone application is helping Canadians coffee-lovers get their hands on a double-double, a little bit faster.
The app is called TimmyMe and it uses near field communication technology, which enables customers to load up money for a tab before-hand, and then simply use the tap-to-pay method in store.
For now, the app is only available for Blackberrys, even though iPhones and Androids seem to be in higher demand.
Tim Hortons says Android 4.4 devices will be in the loop within a few weeks. Meanwhile, the iPhone IOS doesn’t have NFC capabilities.
“I think the test will be over the next three to four years because Android, Blackberry and Windows devices have really caught up in many ways,” said Alec Couros,a professor at the University of Regina.
Bar code scanning technology is being tested in stores in Ontario and the United States and Tim Hortons says iPhone users may get their turn next year.
