CALGARY- In a scene reminiscent of the June flood, Calgarians rushed to help those hit hardest by Monday’s blizzard.
On Tuesday morning, Meals on Wheels put out a plea for volunteers to fill in for drivers who couldn’t get out of their neighbourhoods. Dozens answered the call, navigating deep snow to bring meals to seniors across the city.
“I can pop around pretty good, whereas other people in cars will have a tougher time,” says Ryan Shewchuk, who drives a truck. “I understand that and I also know this is an important asset to the community.”
Even though he ended up getting stuck and had to dig himself out, all of the charity’s deliveries got out.
The Canadian Cancer Society also had to double-shift volunteers who shuttled around 35 cancer patients who needed to get treatment.
