Global National: June 20

Time is running out to find the Titanic tourist submersible missing in the North Atlantic Ocean, with the U.S. Coast Guard saying the vessel could run out of oxygen on the morning of June 22. The search efforts underway, the growing pessimism the watercraft will be found in time, the people believed to on board, what it’s like inside the sub, the challenges of this search and rescue mission; and an interview with Titanic expert and author Tim Maltin about the kind of conditions someone would face at the depths of the North Atlantic, what to make of the timeline of the vessel’s disappearance, and a New York Times report claiming OceanGate Expeditions was warned in 2018 of potential “catastrophic” problems of such endeavours. Two members of the Royal Canadian Air Force are feared dead and two others are injured after a Chinook helicopter crashed in the Ottawa River, near the Garrison Petawawa army base. The search and recovery mission, and the gap in communication between the military and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on what happened. From one extreme to another: some Alberta communities that were recently evacuated due to wildfires are now dealing with flooding. The communities that can’t catch a break. And since their full-scale invasion on Ukraine began, Russian forces have shown no mercy, even bombing out hospitals full of people. Global News Europe Bureau Chief Crystal Goomansingh and video journalist Braden Latam were granted special access to a military hospital in the Kyiv region, and spoke with the doctors and nurses risking their lives to save lives.
