The New Reality: April 9
Description
April 9, 2022
Online conspiracies and misinformation are driving mistrust, division and even violence – much of it is seeded on social media platforms. And big tech companies are cashing in on the views and likes, driven by algorithms designed not to inform but to retain users. In this week’s episode of The New Reality, Jeff Semple profiles Imran Ahmed and the Center for Countering Digital Hate, a small group at the heart of the fight for reform and accountability. Plus, the very fundamentals of our democracy are being eroded by online disinformation. What is the next front in this fight, and how prepared is the next generation to be vigilant about how much social media is warping the line between truth and lies? The answer may surprise you. Dawna Friesen sits down with digital democracy advocate and educator Jesse Miller to find out who is most vulnerable.
