Toronto man rescued by Canadian Coast Guard after vessel capsizes on Lake Ontario
A Toronto man was pulled from the cold waters of Lake Ontario Saturday after his styrofoam boat capsized.
Emergency crews were called to Cobourg’s Victoria Park near Beach Road at about 12:30 p.m. after his boat drifted from the shoreline. He wasn’t wearing a life jacket, his paddle was broken and he did not have a bailing bucket or a whistle with him.
By the time the Coast Guard crew Cape Mercy spotted the vessel it was a mile south of Colborne and partially submerged. The vessel capsized before the crew could get to the man, dumping him in the lake. The temperature of the water is about 9 C.
The 34 year old man was assessed by paramedics when he returned to shore, but refused further treatment.
Northumberland OPP issued him several tickets, which included not having a life jacket on board.
