Floating rock island may be from underwater volcano, pumice

An “island” of pumice floated in the South Pacific, west-southwest of Raoul Island in New Zealand. The pumice, covering an area about the size of Belgium, was first spotted by a Royal New Zealand Air Force patrol on Aug. 9, 2012 and was investigated by a Royal New Zealand Navy ship that was ferrying a group of scientists to Raoul Island.
