Thousands of displaced Palestinians moved north to Gaza City on Friday as the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect. Many of them returned to their homes, whether they were destroyed or not, as Israeli forces withdrew from Gaza’s major urban areas. While troops are still present within the enclave, many Gazans are grateful for some measure of peace. Israelis, meanwhile, are holding their breath for the return of the hostages taken during the Oct. 7 attacks two years ago. For now, Israeli’s and Palestinians are making the most of the reprieve. Vincent McAviney reports.
