On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump said the US and Iran will be holding “direct talks” this coming Saturday at a “very high level.” He said he could not reveal too many details but warned it would be a “very bad day for Iran” if no agreement was reached. For decades, the United States’ top foreign policy has been to limit Iran’s capacity to develop nuclear weapons. Iran has repeatedly rejected direct negotiations with the U.S. while remaining open to discussions through indirect channels.
