Exit polls in Germany show the centre-right Christian Democratic Union party will come out on top in today’s snap federal election with almost 30 per cent of the vote. Conservative leader Friedrich Merz is poised to become the new German chancellor but he will need to form a coalition, possibly with outgoing chancellor Olaf Scholz’s third place Social Democrats.
