The shock offensive in Syria — that country has been gripped with civil war for over a decade but the conflict had remained mostly stagnant over the past few years until last week. Syrian rebels belonging to a militant group known as HTS launched an offensive in Syria’s city of Aleppo. That escalation is now spreading to neighbouring provinces which have largely been under the control of Syria’s strongman ruler Bashar al-Assad. Catherine Urquhart report.
