The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on Friday to a Japanese organization of survivors of the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. Though the victory was an unexpected but welcomed surprise for the group Nihon Hidankyo, its leaders believe they were picked as the winner to help send a global message about the risks of a modern-day nuclear war.
