The Paris Olympics is nearing the end, and it has been a historic run for Team Canada at these summer games. With 27 medals overall — including nine gold — the medal haul is a record for Team Canada. Plus, many Montrealers spent the day dealing with the effects of a record-setting rainfall that flooded several roadways and homes, after the remnants of Storm Debby brought in more than a month’s worth of rain. In Alberta, the mayor of Jasper says a re-entry plan for evacuated residents will be announced on Monday, more than three weeks after wildfire destroyed almost 30 per cent of town. Officials in Brazil have confirmed they have retrieved the ATR 72’s black boxes, a type of plane still used by some Canadian carriers. An Israeli airstrike on a school building sheltering displaced Palestinians in Gaza has killed dozens, and Israel’s actions are already being widely condemned by the international community. Ten years after the death of Tina Fontaine in Winnipeg, the grief and anger is still being felt right across Canada. And finally, Vancouver’s Philip Kim clinched the country’s first gold medal in breaking, a brand-new sport at the Paris Olympics.
