The review came in response to Stats Canada numbers showing almost 40 per cent of reported cases of sexual assault in Kelowna were deemed unfounded in 2018.

The mother of a murdered Okanagan woman says RCMP officers failed to take her daughter’s sexual assault allegations seriously, and she believes that it eventually led to her murder.

According to Statistics Canada, 35 of the 88 sexual assault cases that were reported to Kelowna RCMP last year were dismissed as unfounded.

Cpl. Meghan Foster said the detachment is “not in a position” to explain why so many sexual assault cases were deemed unfounded by investigators in the Okanagan.

The overhaul was launched in the wake of media reports outlining the number of complaints that police deemed unfounded.

The decision comes after an internal review of unfounded cases following 2017 investigative report by the Globe and Mail.
