The conversations — and even the statistics — around gender-based violence often ignore people who are trans or non-binary, despite the fact they live with a heightened risk.

Avery Scurlock, 23, was one of 18 transgender people slain so far this year in the U.S., according to the Human Rights Campaign .

The women believe they were also discriminated against by security, who they say used excessive force to kick them out of the bar.

The decision will make Nova Scotia the fourth province to publicly fund the gender-affirming surgery, joining Britsh Columbia, Alberta and Ontario.
