Administrator Vanda Urban was initially appointed to oversee the day-to-day operations of Summerland Seniors Village in February 2020 for a period of at least six months.

AHS has assigned 20 RNs, a 24/7 onsite manager and other healthcare professionals to work at Calgary's Millrise Seniors Village to ease staffing shortages, but not all family members are satisfied.

Summerland Seniors Village is the fourth Retirement Concepts facility in B.C. to be placed under government management in the past six months.

Retirement Concepts is now owned by a Chinese holding company, making accountability more difficult, the HEU said.

Outside administrators have been appointed to run other Retirement Concepts care homes in Nanaimo, Comox and Victoria.

The latest property, called Selkirk Seniors Village in Vicotria, is a 217-bed extended care facility, and is now under the management of Island Health.

"Can we trust that a Chinese company is not state-controlled, if, as we've just seen, that the Chinese government can just step in and take over?"

As a result of improvements, Interior Health has removed its administrator which has been overseeing the operation 7 days a week since January 25th.
