At the request of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization sent a force of over 2,000 soldiers to act as peacekeepers.

Most of the deaths were in Almaty, the country's largest city, where demonstrators seized government buildings and set some afire, according to the health ministry.
