The downgrade came the same day Nicholas blew ashore as a Category 1 hurricane, knocking out power to a half-million homes and businesses.

Nicholas was already bringing heavy rains, strong winds, and storm surges to portions of the central and upper Texas coasts, the National Hurricane Center said Monday.
