This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Calgary AIDS Walk and Run. Those who survived after being diagnosed as HIV positive are living proof it's not a death sentence.

A number of social agencies and members of the public presented their concerns about the supervised consumption site to Calgary's community services committee.

HIV Community Link's director of programs is optimistic about strategies to deal with the virus in the new year.

Inconsistent coverage by private group benefits is keeping HIV prevention drug Truvada out of the hands of some who are at risk of contracting the virus.

For some Albertans, getting access to Truvada can be extremely difficult due to high cost and lack of coverage under health insurance.

"We know, according to data, 25 per cent of people living with HIV do not know their status," said Joshua McLeod with HIV Community Link in Calgary.
