Geoff Johnson, a photographer in Ucluelet, B.C., off the coast of Vancouver Island, had always wanted to capture the herring spawn and this year was his chance.

The group Conservancy Hornby Island said they received an anonymous tip on March 18 that a fishing boat had dumped thousands of the dead fish north of Nanaimo.
