Edmonton resident Phillip Goncalves says he couldn't sit idly by as local Pride organizers cancelled this year's parade amid conflicts over inclusivity.

It's normally one of the most well-attended events in Alberta's capital, but this year, the Edmonton Pride Festival won't take place at all, according to an email sent out by organizers Wednesday afternoon.

Old Strathcona was packed with people Saturday as the Pride Parade kicked off this year's Edmonton Pride Festival.

For the first time, officers with the Edmonton Police Service and RCMP will not wear their uniforms while participating in the Edmonton Pride Parade next month.

The festival said the application "did not meet expectations" laid out by the organizers. 

On the same day thousands of people attended the Edmonton Pride Parade to show their support for sexual and gender diversity, someone cut down a pride flag from a south Edmonton school and replaced it with a Canadian flag.
