Experts say the new variant first identified in the U.K. is up to 70 per cent more transmissible, but does not appear to cause more severe illness.  

Health Canada says there is no evidence that the new, possibly more contagious strain found in Ontario and B.C. will cause more severe disease or impact vaccine effectiveness.
