CALGARY – Police are investigating a number of frightening nighttime break and enters in the city’s south where residents were at home at the time.

On Wednesday, there were two separate break-ins in the community of Auburn Bay.

In the first incident, the suspect used a garage door opener from an unlocked vehicle to get inside the home through their interior garage door. Several items were stolen from the home while a woman slept on a main floor couch.

In the second incident, the suspect stole items from a car parked in an alley behind the home, before forcing entry into the house, where a family with young children was asleep inside. The homeowner confronted the suspect and chased them from the home.

Although these two break-ins were in Auburn Bay, police say they’ve seen a trend in the last month of similar break-ins in Chaparral, Copperfield, Mahogany and Silverado.

In many cases, the suspect gained entry to the home from garage door openers left inside parked vehicles.

Police are hoping anyone with information on the break and enters will contact them.

They warn Calgarians to lock car doors and remove your garage door openers from your vehicle when you aren’t in it.
