ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Talks aimed at ending a 15-month-long strike at the Voisey’s Bay nickel mine in Labrador have broken off.
A spokesman for the union that represents the workers says they met with negotiators for mining giant Vale briefly but the discussions ended shortly after.
Premier Danny Williams has promised to call an industrial inquiry if no settlement is reached by Friday.
He has appointed three lawyers to help carry out the inquiry.
The union and Vale have had conciliation support from the province’s Labour Relations Agency and the assistance of an independent mediator, but to no avail.
About 100 workers at the mine have been on strike since August 2009.
