Flood victims caught in middle of energy bill mix-up

HIGH RIVER, Alta.- Flood victims in High River have been dealt yet another blow, less than a month before Christmas.

It turns out that Direct Energy hasn’t billed nearly 500 customers for power since the flood, meaning they’re now on the hook for five months worth of electricity use. They’re being given three months to pay.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Tony Walker said he received a bill for $920, and was shocked.

“Somebody needs to do an investigation, or their legal department should look into it,” he complains. “Where are these mistakes, because I’m not the only one, and who’s going to pay the $900? I don’t have it.”

Direct Energy says their billing system showed the homes as being disconnected, and it took until now to fix the error.

The Alberta Utilities Consumer Advocate is now investigating, and plans to contact Direct Energy to ask them to extend the payment deadline.
