A 16-year-old boy is injured after a shooting was reported at a Toronto subway station Monday afternoon, police say.
Toronto police said officers responded to Kennedy Subway Station after 3 p.m. for reports of a shooting.
“When they arrived, they did not locate a victim or any evidence of gunfire, but it was evident that an altercation had taken place,” Insp. Lori Kranenburg told reporters at the scene.
Around half an hour later, a 16-year-old boy contacted police to report that he had been shot at Kennedy Station and had made his way to a residential address.
“Paramedics attended and that youth was treated for what appeared to be a graze wound from a bullet,” Kranenburg said, later adding that his injury was in his abdomen area.
“He was transported to hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.”
It doesn’t appear that the victim was given any assistance at Kennedy Station or that he made it known he needed help, she said.
The shooting appears to have taken place inside the station, on the way down to the subway track level, she said.
Both subway and bus service was interrupted at the station as a result of the incident, but normal operations have since resumed.
Kranenburg provided a general description of the suspect: a male with an average height and average build, in his late teens or early 20s.
She didn’t have the direction of travel that he headed in after the shooting.
“At this point in time, I don’t have any information on whether or not the suspect and the victim knew each other. We’re still very early in the stages of the investigation,” Kranenburg said.
It’s not clear what may have led to the incident, or if there may have been an altercation beforehand.
Investigators have spoken to some witnesses and are appealing for anyone who hasn’t spoken to police to come forward.
“The station would have been quite busy at that point in time and we know there will be other people … who have information to offer,” Kranenburg said.
