Cambridge hospital forced to cancel dozens of surgeries

On Tuesday, Cambridge Memorial Hospital announced that it was forced to postpone 17 surgeries after an issue arose with the reprocessing of operating room instruments.

A day later, the hospital clarified to say the cancelled procedures were on Wednesday and that the ongoing issue has forced it to cancel another 25 elective procedures on Thursday.

“We have maintained a supply of instruments to ensure that we can complete priority surgical cases,” a statement from the hospital read.

The hospital says it has made arrangements with an outside company in an attempt to rectify the issue as it works to uncover what is causing the issue.

CMH will be taking stock on Thursday of where thing stand before it makes any decisions about surgeries which are scheduled to take place going forward.

It also notes that it will be working to reschedule the surgeries as quickly as possible.

“Patients have been waiting for these important scheduled surgeries and our sincere apologies are extended to them for this disruption,” stated CMH vice-president Stephanie Pearsall.

“I want our patients and community to know that our facilities and surgical teams are working diligently to uncover the cause of this situation and to rectify it as soon as possible.  We will keep the community informed as we learn more.”
